I’m still working on the godforsaken The Godforsaken. I’m still waiting for three different publishers to reply about other manuscripts. Two of said publishers are overdue by their own response dates. I emailed one of them and got the autoresponse of “We’ll get back to you within four weeks” — I wonder if that’s about the manuscript or my follow-up email. This is what writers do, dear readers, we write and then wait … and wait … make tea … and wait.

Then I have to answer my Twitter questions, do due diligence with other aspects of my business, feed my husband, pay the mortgage, eat something healthy, feed the dogs, and try — I said try — to get out of my nightgown before 1 PM.

Mama don’t let your babies grow up to write fiction …. Actually, writers are born, not made. Our parents have no say in the matter. It’s just who we are … especially at the ripe, old age of 51.

Which reminds me … it was suggested that I not tell my readers how old I am. Can you believe that? They think readers will be put-off by “old” writers. I doubt it, but even if it was true, the young readers should heed the warning wings of fate (no, I don’t know what that means either). Today you are young and happy and everything is in your prime. In what will seem like five years have passed, you’ll be 51 … and you’ll be writing pitiful missives to readers unseen pointing out that you, too, were young once … and not all that long ago.

Oh, I’m also reminded to keep mentioning Jumlin’s Spawn — so JUMLIN’S SPAWN … the sexy vampires don’t come out till November!

Some of my newer writer friends are feeling down because of the lack of sales for certain titles, versus other people and their four and five-star #1 books. It’s important to remember this — the more books you write, the more readers will find you, the more readers will like your books, and thus the more regular readers you’ll have. That said, Mark Twain never had a bestseller. William Shakespeare never made it to the NY Times Top Ten. Few readers read anything Emily Dickinson wrote in her lifetime. The only reader that counts is the one that “gets” what you’re writing. And to quote Cyril Connelly, better to write for yourself and have no public, than to write for the public and have no self. Now cheer up — you know who you are.

“Jumlin’s Spawn” is the story of three people banding together to fight an old Native American vampire myth come to life. While the horrific but fascinating plot unfolds, a love story between three old friends develops slowly and pleasantly. The author, Melody Clark, does a lovely job of painting a desolate landscape and creating an eerie atmosphere where darkness, fear and eroticism entwine. Her well-defined characters will stick with you even after the last page.”

Wendy Rathbone, author of Dreams of Decadence Presents, a collection of erotic vampire stories and poems.

Set in the Black Hills, this story by Melody Clark provides equally intense action and passion, as well as a likeable, complex and somewhat sceptical trio of heroes are pitted against ancient evil. Dead humans, dead cattle, all drained of blood; an old Lakota legend come to life; and two men and a woman, joined by ties of friendship, love and jealousy, looking to return sacred artefacts to the caves from which they were stolen. But the most dangerous things are those you cannot believe exist and what waits in the Angel Caves is horror beyond belief. The richness of Melody Clark’s writing fully complements the richness of setting and characters, as the mood swings between curiosity and disbelief, terror and passion.

Their online forums will always be filled with hysteria over bad sales. It will come in many forms.

Newbies will complain that the industry is ruled by a few people who won’t give out the secrets, and the old guard is the reason for their bad sales.

The old guard will insist that all the best fruit has been picked, and the youngsters best go on to some other occupation, where they’ll be less competition for the old guard. They blame newbies for bad sales.

Doomsayers, be they people who don’t want to bother to try selling, or those addicted to the old system when the paradigm is changing, will scream about the end being near. They will point to all the signs of the coming sales apocalypse.

A handful of optimists will try to suggest better things are to come, and then be attacked by everyone else.

Then the better things come, and everyone discusses the reasons why this is so. They grow and nurture a whole host of superstitions about what brought forth the harvest, and how the gods might be further appeased to continue it. They banter back and forth on favored theories.

Bad times are usually credited to “the end of everything,” “the summer slump” except when it’s the “always known autumn slump,” which will then be countered by the magic of Christmas.

Now, in bookland, people whisper of great mysteries being brought across the Amazon, by wisemen bearing cheap kindles and Kindle Fires.

It’ll all be the end until it’s a “whole new beginning” again — until the next sales slump. The important thing to remember is that seasons end … and begin again.
