Sales folk, be they writers pushing books or car sellers or porn dealers, have one common constant

Their online forums will always be filled with hysteria over bad sales. It will come in many forms.

Newbies will complain that the industry is ruled by a few people who won’t give out the secrets, and the old guard is the reason for their bad sales.

The old guard will insist that all the best fruit has been picked, and the youngsters best go on to some other occupation, where they’ll be less competition for the old guard. They blame newbies for bad sales.

Doomsayers, be they people who don’t want to bother to try selling, or those addicted to the old system when the paradigm is changing, will scream about the end being near. They will point to all the signs of the coming sales apocalypse.

A handful of optimists will try to suggest better things are to come, and then be attacked by everyone else.

Then the better things come, and everyone discusses the reasons why this is so. They grow and nurture a whole host of superstitions about what brought forth the harvest, and how the gods might be further appeased to continue it. They banter back and forth on favored theories.

Bad times are usually credited to “the end of everything,” “the summer slump” except when it’s the “always known autumn slump,” which will then be countered by the magic of Christmas.

Now, in bookland, people whisper of great mysteries being brought across the Amazon, by wisemen bearing cheap kindles and Kindle Fires.

It’ll all be the end until it’s a “whole new beginning” again — until the next sales slump. The important thing to remember is that seasons end … and begin again.

The Internet Inter-professional Writers Pissing Contest

I just love when writers from various factions of the profession start stepping up to prepare for competitive urination. In one corner, we have the New York publishing writers … the real writers, you know (ahem) … looking down their noses at epubs and epub writers. In another corner, we have the epub people who find it easier to be published (which it should be, given the output of books) and are a bit smug about the future. In the third corner, we have the small press of the paper variety, which pretty much sneers at everybody. And in the fourth, we have self-publishers who, in their most extreme form, seem to want to store canned goods and live on generators in the middle of Elsewhere, USA.

Well, I’ve published in paper AND digital form, and I just want to scream SHUT THE HELL UP, ALL OF YOU!

The fact of the matter is, in 2008, the publishing industry actually EXPANDED for the first time since Louisa May Alcott and her sisters were very little women. There are more titles released now than ever — which is why most epublishers are NOT author mills, by and large, but merely have a much higher output because demand is greater and overhead is lower. If you write and sell your words, you’re a professional writer. If you write and don’t sell your words, you’re still a writer.

In the words of the great Kris Kristofferson … seems like everybody seems to need somebody to look down on. And as he closed it out, “if you can’t find anyone, then help yourself to me.”

New Release: Defining Moments by Melody Clark

This is the one I took back from the prior publishing company and I’m self-publishing it — pardon me, indie publishing it. lol

Longtime friends and business partners Alfredo and Katherine have built a New York architectural empire together. They’re about to embark on their boldest building project ever. They don’t realize that one long-time enemy will use it to do what no one has ever done — split them apart. But the splitting apart drives them together in a way they never thought possible, as the secret flame of twenty years catches their lives on fire.

“Damn it,” she gasped loudly, finally looking around, a dim memory telescoping in her like some trope shot from an Orson Welles film … an extended recollection that only deepened as she recognized the color of the double doors from a different side. “How dare you do this to me?”

“How dare you do this to me? You tested your feelings for me,” he said. “Feelings you were so terrified of telling me about, you let him blackmail you.”

“I was trying to save our business!”

“You were trying to stay in control, same as always!”

Her mouth gaped open and didn’t close for a long moment. She walked toward him, while maintaining a tight hold on her anger. “I have to stay in control? We don’t call you the raja for nothing!”

He walked closer, until they were face to face. “Oh, I know we both have to be in control, Catarina. We’re both just as smart, just as stubborn, just as strong. In fact, the one thing in our lives we can’t control is each other. Oh, God, but it would be so hot to try.”

She didn’t back away an inch. “Take your best shot.”
